A majority of all Americans now support reparations for people of African American and African descent, according to a new poll released today by Democracy in Color and Civiqs. In just one year, support for the establishment of a reparations commission has increased significantly, following similar patterns of growing support for the #BlackLivesMatter movement.
HR 40, which would establish a commission to study the effects of slavery and ongoing discrimination on Black Americans, and explore remedies including reparations, has been introduced in the House for 41 years, but from today’s study appears to have a surge of new support from people nationwide.
Notably, support for reparations has increased significantly across over the past year among various groups in the US:
For Black Americans, support increased from 65% to 84%.
For Hispanic Americans, support increased from 37% to 67%.
For White Americans, support increased from 23% to 39%.
